I just recently read this ebook, and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information it contained on the three different herbs in the title. I think that this would be a great book for people today currently eating the mainstream American diet, because it shows how horrid it is for your body and how eating healthfully may be the key to a cancer-free life.

Preventing Cancer is a quick read and offers a lot of concise information. A great tool to have in your fight to prevent cancer.

 

Daisy’s Review:

This nonfiction book is part cookbook, and part healthy living manual. It contains more than thirty healthful-looking (and tasty-looking!) recipes, as well as detailed information on the foods incorporated in these recipes, and how they may be beneficial for a healthy and cancer-free life.

There is no doubt that the mainstream diet in America today is atrocious, and that it is damaging to your overall health, which can lead to more illness and disease, such as cancer. This book gives some of the basic, easy-to-adopt guidelines for a healthier diet and lifestyle. The book states that there are three readily available herbs that studies have shown have anti-cancer properties: turmeric, ginger, and garlic. According to the author, by incorporating these three herbs in your food, by adopting a healthier diet and lifestyle, and by avoiding carcinogens (some of which are named in this book), you may be able to prevent cancer from forming in your body. He also lists many other things that these three herbs are supposed to be good for.

I thought that this book was pretty good. It was well-researched, and contains many resources in the back of it where the reader may easily double-check the information they find here. I would highly recommend it as a starter education for anybody interested in leaving the standard American diet behind and beginning a healthier life. However, I did not give it more than four stars because he recommends using certain things that might possibly be harmful, such as suggesting  the use of non-stick pans when cooking without qualifying that nonstick Teflon pans are shown to cause cancer. But overall, I think that this would be a good introduction to healthy living for many people, and not just those who are worried about contracting cancer.

 

Interview with the author:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am an engineer by trade but one who is passionate about health and healthy lifestyles. I love cooking and have been using spices and herbs for many years. I have researched benefits of numerous spices and herbs and hope to write more in this area. I believe nature provides solutions to many human ailments which are holistic.

What inspired you to write Preventing Cancer?

I wanted to write a series of books about spices and herbs from my personal experience. I am originally from South Asia and have used spices and herbs all throughout my life. In the last 10 years, I have started studying them even more. Many spices (such as turmeric, ginger, garlic, cinnamon, etc.) have properties that prevent or arrest abnormal cell growth and they work together extremely well. My mother used to use these spices together when she cooked. I also realized that Asia has one of the lowest rates of incidence of cancer. After writing about Ginger, Turmeric and Garlic, I realized the next book in the series needs to be about Cancer.

What was the hardest part about writing this book?

The hardest part is the research. Especially about the benefits of these spices as well as cancer factors, there are many studies conducted and some of the reports are conflicting. After reading many reports, you form an opinion about how these spices and lifestyle help prevent cancer (and many other diseases).One thing to keep in mind is that while these spices and herbs have been used and proven for thousands of years, they have not been fully studied by modern medicine and as such have
not gone through the regulatory process from government agencies such as the FDA. 

How long did it take you to write it, from beginning to end, including the research and recipes?

It took me a year to write the four books in the series. Research for one book helped the next one as these books are all related.

What first interested you in herbs and alternative medicine?

I have always been interested in alternative medicine. But in recent times I have started studying more.

What made you choose the three herbs turmeric, ginger, and garlic to write about?

When I started writing about spices and herbs, I wanted to start with some of the most important and healthiest spices. I also wanted to be sure that I have personally experienced and used them before writing. I have been using these one way or another throughout my life and thought why not start with these for the series.

How long have you been following the diet you outlined in your book, and what are its effects on you personally?

I have used spices and herbs through my life as my family always prepared foods with spices. I started cooking with spices in the last 20 years or so. It is not just the diet or using spices, it is also about preparing fresh food, doing regular exercise (avoid sitting). I have maintained my BMI within the normal range for 25 years and I can hold my own when I play games with people half my age. I have maintained my health and energy level for years.

What are your own personal experiences with cancer?

I have had several of my friends pass away untimely due to various kinds of cancer. In one case, one of my family friends daughter who was only a child died of cancer and it was one of the most difficult experiences for his family and friends. In some of these cases, honestly, I am not sure if it could have been prevented with lifestyle changes, especially in the case of the child. All it takes is one cell to go rogue. World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1/2 of all cancers are preventable and if we can prevent even one death due to cancer, it is worth it.

Do you believe that there is the possibility of a virtually cancer-free America sometime in the future, if people are made more aware of how to prevent it?

Looking at the data world wide, America has 3 times more cancer incidence rate than some of the Asian and African countries. The data shows that developed countries have much higher cancer rates (300+ in 100,000 population) than developing countries (100-150 in 100,000). WHO estimates that more than half of all cancer incidence are preventable.

We will need to continue research for a cure. While we have made significant progress in research and development on new drugs for different kinds of cancer (some more than others), more new forms of cancer have been surfacing than ever happened before.

Prostrate cancer in males and breast cancer in women are the two most common forms of cancer. If we can prevent these or find a cure, it will be a great step.

So, in my opinion, a combination of cancer awareness and prevention due to lifestyle changes and finding a cure are the two focus areas. Awareness and prevention are within the power of each one of us while trusting our government and private sector to fund and advance cancer research. With this two pronged approach, we should get cancer rates down.

Care to tell us a little bit about the other books you’ve written?

As I said earlier, I wanted to write a series of books on spices and herbs. My first book was on turmeric which is one of the best spices in the world for its medicinal (anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer) properties. The other books are on garlic and ginger. These books follow a simple format – benefits, simple recipes on how to use them, home remedies and tips.

Can we expect to see more books from you in the future?

Yes, I am in the process of writing additional spice books, books on wellness drinks and I also want to write about Alzheimer’s.

Are there any books, other than your own, that you would recommend to people worried about getting cancer?

There are many great books out there on cancer. Some written by doctors in the field. Some by survivors. My advice is pick up a book that is simple, practical and has some tips that you can follow easily. Lifestyle change are difficult so any book that is practical and simple is a good book to choose.
